How it happened…

Friday, October 5th was my birthday. We were making plans to spend it together and Ed asked me if I would like to do something in Athens or Atlanta. I was eager to get away and relax for the weekend so Atlanta seemed like a better choice. Ed told me that he had a surprise planned for dinner but didn't really give any more details. Since I am teaching in Statham and he is finishing school at Tech and running his business in Atlanta, we usually only see each other on the weekends so we make consistent plans for one of us to travel to see the other. That usually means one of is desperately trying to get there as fast as they can on Friday.

Traffic could not have been worse when I was trying to get to Atlanta. It had been raining all day but the weather had cleared up and the sky was just incredibly blue that day. Ed had a crazy week at school with four tests and he was clearly eager to see me too. When I got there we had a couple of hours to crash before dinner so we got cleaned up and took our time heading over the “the restaurant.” He told me that our reservations were at 7:30. We tend to run late for things so as we were driving at about 7:35 Ed called someone and asked them if it would be alright if we were a few minutes late because we were going to stop and do something. I had mentioned how beautiful the sunset was that evening and Ed said that we were going to go take some pictures of ourselves with the skyline in the background. He got a tripod out of his car and we headed for the Georgia Tech Bobby Dodd football stadium.

The Tech football game that weekend was away so the stadium was deserted. We were the only two people there but they had left a gate open so we could get in. We walked for what felt like forever but Ed kept leading me to a “better view.” We had to climb down a trash can to get onto the field so that we could get into another section and then to an elevator that we rode to the upper deck on the north end of the field. Then we got off and walked toward the top of the section. I bet we walked around the seats for 15 minutes.

He let me lead us to the top of the section which was the highest point in the stadium. There was a press box at the top where you could see every building in Atlanta. It was just getting dark and the skyline was amazing. When I got to the top I noticed a table, perfectly decorated with a black linen table cloth and napkins, candles, roses, and everything you could ask for in a fine dining restaurant. There was a cooler next to the table and as we walked over Ed said, “Welcome to dinner.”

The view was simply incredible and so was the food. I had been talking for weeks about how much I was craving some sushi. Ed had gone by Ru San's and gotten a to-go order earlier that day. We enjoyed the meal and started talking. Ed gave me my birthday present wrapped in gold foil with a black ribbon to match the Tech theme of the night. He had gotten me a pink tennis racket and pink tennis balls so that we could start playing tennis together. He also got me a new ink cartridge because I have not been able to print things since school began.

After dinner and opening the gift we continued to sit and admire the view and appreciate the wonderful breeze. We talked about our weeks and how happy we were to see each other. We reminisced on how satisfying and fulfilling our relationship had been lately and how excited we were about our future. By the end of the conversation we were both in tears feeling like things couldn't get any better. Then, of course, they did.

The conversation paused and Ed looked away. I glanced around to look at the brightly lit buildings. When my eyes returned to Ed he was down on one knee starring straight at me. I started to cry as he said, “Megan I love you so much and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?” I grabbed him and continued to ball. Eventually I managed an “Of course” with my voice still shaking. I looked down at the ring in Ed's hand.

It is the most beautiful ring that I have ever seen. It is a round brilliant diamond a little over three carats sitting as high in the Tiffany 6 prong platinum setting as the thin band will hold it up. Ed said that he had picked it up today from a local jeweler after being unsatisfied with several others that he had ordered from a wholesaler in New York and a diamond cutter in Florida. It sparkles wonderfully and I love it. I love him more.

I could not believe it. I had just been thinking as I looked out over Atlanta how amazing this place would be as a spot to get engaged. I kept asking Ed if this was all for real and repeating to myself that this was serious. I was overwhelmingly happy and my mind was going everywhere. We continued to talk and cry and hug each other. Then Ed got desert out of the cooler. He had gotten some of our favorite deserts from Cafe Intermezzo. He got me a perfectly creamy slice of cheesecake covered in fresh berries with a ginger snap crust and he had a very rich slice of chocolate cake. As great as it all was, I could not stop looking down at the ring and at Ed.

After dinner we took some pictures and headed back to Ed's apartment. We had planned to stay there through the weekend but I had to get home to Buford to tell my mom in person. I called my dad and told him that we were engaged. Ed had, of course, asked his permission the day before at lunch so he knew to expect it but he didn't offer much of a response on the phone. It was clear that he had not told mom and he agreed that it would be better to tell her in person.

We went home for the night and saw mom. She was thrilled and so was my brother Zachary. They were eager to hear how he asked and to see my ring. We spent the rest of the weekend traveling around seeing friends and relatives eager to hear about it.

I am so happy and so excited. It was the fairy tale engagement that I always wanted. I think Ed enjoyed it too. We have not made any plans, set any dates, or started looking for dresses. We are taking our time and enjoying being engaged. Thank you all for the kind and supportive words. I love you all so much. :)
